Meeting Notes and other things | Lisa Turek – Email Blast

Good afternoon! I have been a little behind on my meeting notes and reminders. There are no meetings this week.

The county commissioners met last Wednesday.  All commissioners were present except Adam Brege.  There were about a dozen in the audience.  The minutes from the last meeting were approved. There was only one public comment from Margaret Kutzera stating she would like an evening meeting.

The sheriff talked for a few minutes about the school resource officer grant. It is for only 50% of a salary and before he puts an officer in the school full time, he would like the school to pay the other half.  He was waiting for the school to agree.  He also has a new hire in mind.

Steve from the Medical Examiners Office brought a contract to sign. There is a significant increase in the fees.  If I am not mistaken, it’s $9,000 for the first year and $17,000 for the next four years. Which would mean the county would pay $27,000 and then $35,000.  If the county paid for a la carte services, it would be more expensive as the last two years would have been in the $42,000 range. Later in the meeting the board approved the signing of the contract.

Claims were paid from 02/05-02/28 in the amount of $581,039.76.  The board passed a motion to sign the Township Land Division Service Agreement. I think the only change from last year is that it is in effect until either party wants out, except Mikado and Caledonia townships.

The City of Harrisville master plan was mentioned but left for the 30 period they have to respond. The treasurer said, as of the tax date 02/28, 371 of 600 properties are in forfeiture, 56 slated for foreclosure.  Assessed values in the county have increased. Stephany went to a clerk’s conference where proposal 2 was the topic of conversation. I guess there will be NINE days of early voting.

Committee reports – Terry Small said Consumer’s is having public meetings (I think about the dams?), the NEMCOG administrative assistant has resigned and the health department said Alcona County has low levels of the virus and marked some date in May that the some covid protocols expire. (I had to laugh…..not out loud, though) Dave Jagst said the Lincoln Library is getting a quote on repairs from being hit by a car. $12,000 for a new window. The building department is moving. Carolyn Brummund asked Scott Rice to share a little about DHS and FEMA. There is a public meeting in Bay City behind Meijer on the first Monday of the month at 1:30. He talked a little about certification for an emergency situation and what training they do. For example, if a dam breaks.  Mikado township elected their officials.  The ACCOA is doing well. There was an opioid meeting and they are gathering information for a possible rehab house.

The last public comment was next. Gary Wnuk asked if any of the county commissioners had the emergency situation certification that is required and no one spoke that they had it.   He also asked why none of the media was at the last ACCOA meeting. He suggested they show up only when there seems to be trouble and now that things are calming down, they are nowhere to be seen.  He said they did a great disservice to the community by not showing up at the last meeting.

The next meeting is March 15th at 1:30. Meeting adjourned at 2:43pm.

I did take notes at the last ACCOA meeting but they were in the form of minutes so I could help out the secretary of the ACCOA. He will review the meeting on the video to confirm what notes I took.  So I don’t have my usual notes regarding the meeting.  Here is the link to the meeting on you tube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot85D6nccSo  Thanks to Jeff Dobbs for filming!

I did hear of some happenings at the school. There is a girl who is using the boy’s bathroom at the high school. And there was an incident regarding a threat by one student to shoot another.  It seems, according to the high school principal, there is protocol in place to assess these threats that includes conducting a threat assessment which is done by a team including a social worker.  I wonder why they keep allowing kids in school who are a threat to other kids? Could it be because they want the money? There is also something called a ‘reset room’? I can guess what this is. But why do they need such a thing?  I feel very sorry for parents who have to have their children in that environment.  I think a private Christian school is definitely in order in Alcona County. 🙂  Also, I missed the school strategic planning meeting.  I really wanted to go but got word at the last minute and couldn’t get out of work.

Hope you have a great week. Next week Monday starts with the school board meeting at 5:30pm, middle school lobby.
