Michigan’s Latest Anti-Gun Legislation: HB 6544

Categories 2nd Amendment, Editorial, State NewsPosted on

The Assault begins with so-called assault weapons.

Since the mid term elections last month, it really didn’t take much time at all for the agenda of the “progressives” in the Michigan Legislature to show their hand. While these specific bits of legislation have nearly zero percent of passing in this session, the dirty work of writing it for the next session is already done.

In case you missed it, two bits of news came out on 1 December 2022: First is the communist takeover of our energy grid, and the other is a blatant attack on the United States Constitution’s 2nd Amendment. Alcona County, allow me to introduce you to HB 6544, HB 6545, and HB 6546.

These bills collectively and directly represent a preview of what is to come, and of course, they represent a flagrant violation of “shall not be infringed”.

Today, we’re covering the big one: 6544

Who is attacking our God-Given Rights this time?

On this occasion, you need look no further than Dearborn Democrat Jeffrey Pepper. Pepper is a lawyer, self prescribed activist, and soon-to-be former State Representative. And he seems to want to leave Michigan more fascist than when he took office.

As for what he has to say about his proposed legislation,

Here’s the full verbiage of this unconstitutional “legislation”:

HOUSE BILL NO. 6544
December 01, 2022, Introduced by Rep. Pepper and referred to the Committee on Military, Veterans and Homeland Security

A bill to ban the manufacture, possession, purchase, and sale of assault weapons; to provide certain powers and duties for certain state and local officials and agencies; to provide for the promulgation of rules; and to provide penalties.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

Sec. 1. As used in this act, “assault weapon” means a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has 1 or more of the following characteristics:

(i) A pistol grip or thumbhole stock.

(ii) Any feature capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the nontrigger hand.

(iii) A folding or telescoping stock.

(iv) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel.

Sec. 2. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, beginning January 1, 2024, a person shall not manufacture, possess, purchase, or sell an assault weapon in this state.

(2) A person may continue to possess an assault weapon that the person legally possessed before the effective date of this act if both of the following apply:

(a) The person registers the assault weapon with the department of state police in compliance with rules adopted for that purpose by the department of state police.

(b) The person renews the registration of the assault weapon every 5 years.

(3) A person who violates subsection (1) is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 5 years.

Sec. 3. The department of state police shall promulgate rules pursuant to the administrative procedures act of 1969, 1969 PA 306, MCL 24.201 to 24.328, to implement this act.

Here’s what I think…

It really isn’t difficult to see what is going on here. The Globalist Democrats want nothing more than for the USA to look precisely like Europe, Canada, and Australia (and will do just about anything to achieve it).

If this eventually passes, and withstands the eventual lawsuits (not likely), the attack on our unique freedoms will continue to come under fire as quickly but, incrementally as they are able to get away with.

On the plus side: Strategically, was this action taken too soon? To me, it seems like this is a somewhat premature move on their part. Everyone knows that Americans love our guns. It is our God given right to do so, after all. There are few things that can embolden, motivate, and unite people in this country like our guns can. Which leads me to consider these questions: Are they desperate for some reason? Is this an indication of just how deep their agenda is? Is this a distraction from something else?

Mr. Pepper is probably being used to push this on his way out the door since he isn’t serving any further terms. Even among many middle ground Democrats, treading on the 2nd Amendment is a risky move politically…

We will see what happens.
